My first task as Egypt’s first female shipmaster was to help navigate a vessel through the new Suez Canal waterway during the opening celebrations, which made me very proud. As a 2012 AASTMT graduate from Alexandria, I learnt all the key skills to help me on the road to my new career. Initially, I enrolled as a student in the maritime transport department at AASTMT, but I was later encouraged to move to the marine navigation department after finding out that there were no rules that prohibited women from studying to become shipmasters.
